SAINTS striker Che Adams revealed he remains in contact with his former coach James Beattie – and added he would love the club legend to join the staff at St Mary’s.

The 45 year old scored 68 Premier League goals in 204 appearances for Saints between 1998-2005 and has gone into coaching following the end of his playing career.

Beattie – who netted 23 goals in the 02-03 Premier League campaign alone – tutored Scottish international Adams during a spell as first-team coach at Birmingham City.

Adams revealed he has stayed in touch with the legendary Saints hitman, who is currently out of work after leaving Wigan in November last year.

“I do still speak to him, he gives me the odd pointer,” Adams said. “Beatts is a great guy, he has been tapping me up to get in here!

“He'd be great. He's a great person and what a player as well. An even better person. To have someone like that would make it even better. We'll see what happens but I'd like to work with him again.”

Saints are expected to confirm details of their coaching staff from under-18s to the first team in the coming weeks.

After Ruben Selles was appointed as Nathan Jones’s successor, the likes of B team head coach Dave Horseman have been helping the Spaniard out with coaching roles open.

It means someone, like Beattie, could come in externally to complete the group. Adams, however, did praise the impact Selles has already made.

“He is a really good guy, he comes and talks to you as a normal person, asking how things are at home,” Adams said.

“It is really important, we're all normal guys we all have problems. Everyone was really happy when he got the job. Every day working with him is really good, he is really intense so he demands a lot but everyone is willing to push forward.”
